Let’s face it, after all of the recent holiday celebrations and gatherings, many of us feel like we need a vacation! Fortunately, if you’re reading this, the chances of you living in or near beautiful Lake Norman are pretty high. There’s so much to do every day it can become somewhat hard to choose just one thing—such a great problem to have! The towns of Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville are full of fun things to do, fantastic dining establishments, cultural and community events galore, and other happenings; no matter what you choose, you can’t go wrong.
FUN THINGS TO DO
The Visit Lake Norman website provides countless excursion ideas. For recreational activities there is always the ever popular sailing and rowing since Lake Norman is home to the NC Community Sailing and Rowing Center. If you’re in the mood for a little cultural excursion, consider a few stops on their Arts & Culture Tour Map. Your younger children (from toddlers to 8 year olds) are sure to love spending some time at Discovery Place Kids, where they can enjoy learning through imaginative play, arts, crafts and more. Kids of all ages (and adults as well) will enjoy painting and decorating their own ceramic creations at Meg-Art. If the arts and crafts thing really isn’t your style, consider a few stops on the History & Heritage Tour Map instead. This map will afford you the opportunity to learn about the historical significance of the area. If you’re still not quite sure what to do, why not try some good, old fashioned retail therapy: the Shopping Tour Map is just what the doctor ordered. You can do your part to stimulate the local economy by spending some time perusing some of the local shops.
GOOD FOOD TO EAT
Although the beautiful Lake Norman area delivers the essence of southern charm and hospitality, the dining experiences here are anything but small town. Eclectic and diverse are definitely two words that adequately describe the choices. You can choose from local favorites (e.g., CookHouse Restaurant) that are sure to please, award-winning restaurants (e.g., North Harbor Club Restaurant and Bar) that are unlike any places you’ve dined at previously, or well-known chain restaurants that are always a hit with the kids. If you’ve got a craving for it, the chances of one of the local restaurants serving it are pretty good. Your taste buds won’t go home disappointed.
PLENTY OF WINE TO DRINK
With more than 400 vineyards and 100 wineries, it should come as no surprise that North Carolina ranks 7th in wine production and 10th in grape production nationally; we are the only place in the world where every major type of grape is grown as well as the home of America’s first grape. Our wineries and vineyards are yet another reason to get out and enjoy the beautiful Lake Norman area. There are several locations that are an easy day trip from the region; Daveste´ Vineyards is located on 52 acres near Lake Norman and is notable for cultivation of uncommon Malbec, Rkatsiteli and Chouchillon grape varietals. They offer wine tastings in their Tasting Room, which also features an art gallery with selected works by NC artists.
